NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday gave his assent to the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act 2021, granting extra powers to the lieutenant governor in Delhi.
The central authorities introduced the presidential assent to the invoice by way of a gazette notification.
The legislation seeks to specify that any choice of the state cupboard or authorities would wish his “opinion” earlier than implementation, and that the expression, “Government”, referred to in any legislation to be made by the meeting shall imply the LG.
The NCT Bill, 2021 was handed by the Lok Sabha on Monday amidst robust opposition from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which mentioned that the laws is “unconstitutional”.
In the Rajya Sabha, deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Sigh declared the invoice handed in a voice vote after a walkout by the opposition. Opposition events, together with the Congress, Biju Janata Dal, YSR Congress and Samajwadi Party opposed the invoice and walked out in protest.
Condemnation of the transfer by the Kejriwal authorities was swift with the CM himself calling it “unconstitutional and undemocratic”. Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had additionally mentioned the invoice will render the elected CM meaningless and have harmful penalties for the nation’s federal construction.
